My name is Mike McCoy and GraduateWithAProfit.com is my site dedicated to providing students knowledge on ways they can in fact graduate with a profit and make money while in school/college. I am an avid entrepreneur and want to share my thoughts, ideas, and knowledge to others in hopes that they can turn a profit and grasp the excitement of being an entrepreneur in school.
About Me - Previous Work Experience
I currently live in Columbia, Maryland and have lived there for about 15 years. I received my first computer at the age of ten and self taught myself everything I know today. When I was twelve, I created a website about a PC Game (StarCraft) which received enough web traffic to be sponsored by TeknoSurf.com which is now known as Advertising.com. I received my very first check for my traffic for about $255 which I attribute much of my interest in the internet because of this.
I attended River HIll High School where I was enrolled in the Technology Magnet Program studying Data Communications. While in school, I was the Founder and President of an announcements/broadcasting club. I was featured in a local newspaper article for increasing school spirit and finding my high school hobby.
At the same time, I started a computer consulting hobby/business; McCoy Computer Assistance, at the age of 15. I became CompTIA A+ Certified and CompTIA Net+ Certified before I graduated high school. I advertised in my local neighborhood newsletter, email newsletter to clients, and newspaper advertisements. I was so busy at times that I had to turn away business because I was a one man shop. After I graduated high school, I was recruited to work at Geeks on Call as the youngest franchise employee. I spent the summer interning with the company where I gained more business exposure and broadened my technical skills also.
I attended Howard Community College my freshman year in college where I continued my computer consulting business. Again, I was featured in a local newspaper article that highlighted my young entrepreneurial spirit and technical skills. It was this article that landed me an internship with the Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU-APL).
I interned at the JHU-APL for two years; my freshman and sophomore summer vacations. The first year I was in the Business Services Department where I did internal website design and coding for the Accounting group. The second year I was recruited into the Classified Information Systems Security Office (CISSO) where I researched the vulnerabilities of virtual machine software (VMWARE) with Linux and Windows.
For my final internship, I was recruited to work at Lockheed Martin’s Corporate Headquarters in Bethesda, MD. While I worked here, I worked in the Account Management (AM) department and also had a side proejct with a group called Creative Central (CC). For my work within AM, I helped map and improve the business process of how the interaction between Account Managers, System Engineers and Service Delivery Managers worked. I created a flowchart that layed out the process that a project goes through, the different phases, who needs to be contacted, and maintainence issues. For my work within CC, I was the team lead of an eight person intern team that was responsible for researching, developing, and presenting a prototype system for increased communication. My mentors were so impressed, I was flown to Orlando, FL to give the presentation live to upper management.
